Multi Agent Cognitive Orchestration
An autonomous Socratic tutor that plans, teaches, verifies, and adapts
Why this name
“Multi-agent cognitive orchestration” names the architecture honestly: Cognita is not one chatbot but a coordinated team of specialised agents, each owning one cognitive job a human tutor does, orchestrated around a live model of the learner.
The problem
Today's AI helpers are reactive: they answer a prompt and forget. A real tutor notices what you keep getting wrong, decides what to work on next, switches tactics when you're stuck, sets practice, and checks you actually mastered it. Single-shot chatbots cannot sustain that loop.
What we're building
Give Cognita a goal, such as “get me ready for the algebra paper”, and it runs the whole loop autonomously: plan, teach, assess, adapt. At the centre sits Raphael, our orchestrating agent: it directs a planner that builds the study path, an explainer that teaches, an assessor that marks and probes for misconceptions, and a memory agent that carries what it learned about you into every future session.
Key capabilities
Goal-conditioned planning: a target grade becomes a personalised, self-revising study path, π(a | s, goal).
Specialised agent team: planner, explainer, assessor, and memory agents coordinate behind one conversation, conducted by Raphael.
Tool use: calls practice sets, simulations, marking, and diagram generation when the moment calls for it.
Socratic policy: guides with questions first; reveals answers last.
Longitudinal memory: tracks mastery across sessions and adjusts pace and strategy over time.
Research focus
Multi-agent cognitive architectures for personalised, adaptive tutoring.
Choosing the next best teaching action from a live model of the learner's understanding.
Keeping autonomous agents safe, honest, and aligned, never fabricating, never over-helping.
Where it fits at ILM AI
The orchestration brain behind Ilmino, connecting the AI tutor “ilmi”, the revision planner, practice, and analytics into one companion that runs the whole learning journey.
Cognita: the tutor that plans, teaches, and adapts on its own.
