The future of learning we are building toward
A note on where ILM AI is headed. We believe the most important measure of educational AI is not how much it can do for a student, but how much it helps a student become able to do without it.
It is worth stating plainly what we are trying to build toward, because the answer shapes every decision we make. Our aim is not to create a system that students depend on. It is to help students become people who no longer need one.
That may sound like an odd goal for a technology company. The usual incentive is to make a product indispensable. But in education, dependence is failure. A student who cannot reason without the tool has not learned; they have borrowed. The purpose of a good teacher, and of good educational technology, is to work themselves out of a job for that particular student.
We picture a future in which every learner has access to patient, personalised guidance, the kind that has historically been available only to those who could afford a private tutor. Guidance that meets a student where they are, adapts to how they think, and never runs out of patience. Made widely available, that could be one of the more meaningful applications of this technology.
We are realistic about the distance between that vision and the present. Educational AI today is useful but imperfect. It can mislead, it can be misused, and it works best alongside good teaching rather than in place of it. We would rather describe the road honestly than oversell the destination.
What we can commit to is the direction. Every feature we build is measured against a single question: does this help a student understand, and eventually understand without us? Anything that fails that test, however impressive, is not worth building.
That is the future we are working toward, and the standard we want to be judged against.
